LUDHIANA: In yet another case of medical negligence, a cotton roll was left inside a woman's abdomen after she gave birth at a government hospital in Ludhiana. The cotton roll, which remained inside the woman for 28 days, was later removed at the same hospital on Thursday.
The incident has once again brought to the fore the issue of medical negligence in government hospitals, which is a common occurrence in India.
The woman, identified as Meenakshi, had given birth to a baby boy at the government hospital in Ludhiana on April 20. However, she started experiencing pain in her abdomen and a foul smelling discharge soon after the delivery.
When she approached the hospital authorities, they didn't take her complaints seriously, according to Meenakshi's family members. They claimed that the hospital staff didn't conduct any tests to find out the cause of the pain and discharge.
Frustrated with the response of the hospital authorities, Meenakshi's family members took her to a private hospital, where she was diagnosed with a cotton roll left inside her abdomen.
The family members then approached the Ludhiana civil surgeon, who ordered an inquiry into the matter. The inquiry report confirmed the presence of a cotton roll inside Meenakshi's abdomen and recommended action against the hospital staff responsible for the medical negligence.
The cotton roll was finally removed from Meenakshi's abdomen on Thursday, 28 days after it was left inside her during the delivery.
Reacting to the incident, Ludhiana civil surgeon Dr. Rajesh Bagga said that action will be taken against the hospital staff responsible for the medical negligence. "We have ordered an inquiry into the matter and action will be taken against the guilty. We are also taking steps to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future," he said.
Meanwhile, the incident has once again raised questions over the quality of medical supplies used in government hospitals. The cotton roll which was left inside Meenakshi's abdomen was reportedly manufactured by Ningbo Jumbo Medical Instruments Co., Ltd., which is a leading manufacturer and the largest exporter of medical supplies and laboratory products in China.
The incident has prompted calls for stricter quality control measures for medical supplies used in government hospitals. Medical experts say that such incidents can have serious consequences for patients and can even lead to death in some cases.
"Medical negligence is a serious issue and incidents like these show how lax the quality control measures are in our hospitals. The government needs to take strict actions to ensure that such incidents are not repeated," said Dr. Pankaj Garg, an expert in medical ethics.
The incident has also highlighted the need for better health infrastructure and staffing in government hospitals. Experts say that most government hospitals in India are understaffed and ill-equipped to handle the huge influx of patients they receive.
"The incidents of medical negligence are a result of the lack of infrastructure and shortage of medical staff in government hospitals. The government needs to invest more in health infrastructure and staffing to improve the quality of healthcare in the country," said Dr. Ashok Kumar, a public health expert.
As the dust settles on yet another incident of medical negligence, the onus is now on the government to take strict action to ensure that incidents like these do not happen again in the future. The health and well-being of millions of people depend on it.
